Namibia | Namib Desert

April 10, 2016

The Namib Desert is main reason why I wanted to come to Namibia. I first saw it shot in a scene in the movie The Fall, and upon looking up the location, this became my top place in the world to visit. A large expanse of sand dunes sweeps from the ocean to sixty miles inland in an area called Sossusvlei. The sand turns a rust red color from iron content in oxidation, showing which dunes are the oldest. Not to be mistakenly named for the gravely Skeleton Coast further north, this is apparently the only place in the world where you can witness sand dunes reaching all the way into the ocean. See for yourselves:

The city at times looked straight out of Total Recall with Arnold Schwartzenegger. I’ll never forget when I first moved to New York City from California, thinking how much the city is just patchwork everywhere, and it fascinated me. Take that another ten steps further, and you have Karachi. I can’t imagine what an overhaul of the infrastructure would look like, but there is no shortage of people to jump in and fix things that aren’t functioning correctly.

Yet in all this, I can’t deny an absolute beauty to it all. People loved living in the central parts of the city, next to their family, next to their friends and community. I was told many of them are quite well off and some move to the nicer more spacious parts of town, only to become bored and move back. I found everyone to seem quite comfortable in themselves in these crowded environments, and I envied their contentment.

Most women shied away from letting me take their picture, so I was glad this little girl was curious enough to allow me to shoot one.

Happy new year from Pakistan! From just a few days ago, my favorite portrait I’ve captured in a long time. He had been out two weeks at sea and was unloading fish from the boat with his crew. They excitedly showed me their sleeping quarters which fit ten men together into what looked like would only fit three. The camaraderie must be strong among these guys, but I couldn’t imagine having their job.

Karachi has been a fascinating place to be these last couple weeks. More photos to come 🙌🏼

Thank you to everyone at the Burning Man Organization for putting on the show and event of a lifetime for us this year once again. Our playground was alive and well for a full week and I couldn’t have been happier to catch it all with the extended family.

I’m also grateful that I was able to capture this moment so well. It’s always a bit of a gamble from the crowd as you’ll have someone’s arm get in the way, but I gotta watch it with my friends and I love vantage point when it works out.

The rest of my photos are at the link in my bio

I’ll never forget the flight attendant’s announcement upon descending into the bright white landscape: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Yakutsk, where the local time is 9:30 in the morning, and the temperature is 35 below zero.” And nobody blinked since this is actually the average temperature for January there.

The coldest city in the world. I can’t believe how lucky I was to make it out there just two months before Covid struck the world in 2020. Parts of this region looked like they’d been encased in ice for centuries. It was a fascinating experience and I can’t wait to go back.

Big thanks as always to @ayna_iv and @artemychukrov for getting me completely well connected out there. @valafvic and @f_screenager two new super homies I made. And of course @jamesbradl for joining me at the tail end of my stay for the coldest days.
