NYC Pride 2017

June 27, 2017

Sunday June 25 2017 marks one of the most fun events I’ve been to in New York City. And the fact that it’s for the purpose of celebrating something as special as gay rights just makes it all the better. I was very grateful to get invited by a new good friend of mine Tyisha to walk with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation‘s bus, and as excited as I was, this day was beyond my expectations.

The energy of this parade was completely matched by the energy of the crowd, which was full of smiles and cheer that were all so purely positive. It was amazing to see people of all types of backgrounds, classes, etc all come together to celebrate the LGBT community. It amazes me that in today’s world this is still an issue, knowing that people in certain countries are getting killed for their preferences. As a straight white male I’m about as privileged as it gets, but it angers me to know that there is so much hate against a group of people for this absurd reason. My pride for this day was knowing that I live in one of the most progressive cities in one of the most progressive countries in this world. I love New York so much for this reason and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it.

In the end, I don’t care who you are or where you come from, there is no reason to discriminate against someone for their sexual orientation. This is humans loving humans and between consenting adults none of this should matter at all. Love is love is love. Happy to share a few smiles with you.

I’ll never forget the flight attendant’s announcement upon descending into the bright white landscape: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Yakutsk, where the local time is 9:30 in the morning, and the temperature is 35 below zero.” And nobody blinked since this is actually the average temperature for January there.

The coldest city in the world. I can’t believe how lucky I was to make it out there just two months before Covid struck the world in 2020. Parts of this region looked like they’d been encased in ice for centuries. It was a fascinating experience and I can’t wait to go back.

Big thanks as always to @ayna_iv and @artemychukrov for getting me completely well connected out there. @valafvic and @f_screenager two new super homies I made. And of course @jamesbradl for joining me at the tail end of my stay for the coldest days.

A few beautiful scenes and people from 2017. I often wonder if I’ll ever get bored of photographing out there, and my consensus is that it’s doubtful. Sometimes I come home and feel like my images don’t tell a new story, but then sometimes I look back and can’t believe how many significant moments I took part in. But for the most part, it reinvigorates a love for photography in me, as I’ve just been surrounded by 70,000 enthusiastic people who enjoyed connecting and being photographed.

Last year was interesting to say the least, and I’m excited to see how it all comes back together this time around. I hope we can stay safe and get those feelings back of floating around the dry desert floor at all hours of the day and night.

Who else is going??

I’m happy to post a shoutout to this badass @swatithiyagarajan who I’ve had the privilege of becoming good friends with in the last two years (big thanks to Matt Emmer @world_unleashed). Swati has dedicated her career to wildlife conservation and bringing awareness of their threats to a global audience. Click to @seachangeproject which her husband Craig (mister Octopus Teacher) co-founded to see their message.

Our daily five minute plunges were a must during the cold weather last month just north of NYC.

Who else is into the cold water immersion?? (@expandingbreath @deputyduck @sheepdog_adventures looking at you 👀😋🥶)
